The way I see it……..a person’s words are a person’s ultimate power……words spoken, words read, words heard, words written, words……. I love words! A lot has been coming up for me lately about the power words hold. When I keep getting a replay of the same info from different sources and mediums, I know I need to pay attention.

I just finished and am now rereading a book named,  The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scoval Shinn. It is, I would say, the original version of the remake, The Secret, but with biblical references to support the law of attraction. I am able to understand and accept the principles more fully when the bible supports the ideals.

Florence lived from 1871 through 1940. Who knew self-help books were popular then? She believed that words, visualizations, thoughts, thankful prayers to God, and intuition were the key to living the best possible life, the one God wants you to have. She quotes this verse from the bible about how a person’s thoughts color the world they live in. “I will give to you the land that thou seest.” If you can imagine it and keep your eyes and heart on whatever is “true, noble, right, pure, and lovely,” it will materialize.

I remember reading a story that reminds me of this law. Some people came to this wise man in a village to consult him about their upcoming move to a new area. They asked him if he thought the area was a good area. They wanted to know about the people who lived there, “Were they good people? Was it safe? Would they be happy there?” He asked them about the neighborhood they currently lived in? They had nothing but good things to say about it. “Oh, we love it–the neighbors are so nice, it is a safe area, the children all play peacefully together.” The wise man says, “It is very much the same.” They thanked him and departed and lived happily in their new home.” Another family came to visit the guru to check on the very same neighborhood. When asked about the condition of their current area, they had nothing good to say, “The neighbors are bad people, we don’t like anyone there because they are mean. The children of the neighborhood are thieves and troublemakers.” The old man said, “The new neighborhood is very much the same.” I am sure you can imagine the outcome for the second family —God says, “I will give to you the land that thou seest.” See the best and you will be given more of the same.

Another great validation that I have had recently of the power of words is from Joel Osteen. I was blessed to attend his “Night of Hope” Friday night. He talked about staying positive with your words both to others and more specifically, to yourself. Some people would never let other people talk to them the way they talk to themselves, especially in the realm of the mind. You wouldn’t allow someone to stay in your life if they continually said, “You are– stupid, fat, worthless, an idiot, ugly, etc.” I hope you wouldn’t put up with that very long. It wouldn’t be very pleasant to be around that person, yet some of us do this very thing to ourselves. Talk yourself up, not down. Look in the mirror and say, “You look fantastic.” Maybe you don’t look fantastic–say, “It’s OK, you have a lot going on, take time to do something nice for yourself.” or “The painting I’m doing is looking great; it will look fantastic tomorrow.” When you make a mistake and you want to call yourself stupid or an idiot, instead say, “OK, I’ll do that differently next time, because I learned a lesson from that.” Forgive yourself just as you forgive others. We are human.

One related aspect that we don’t consider much is the effect our words have on our emotions and the effect our emotions have on our health. Negativity can cause disease. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit,” from Proverbs 18:21. Use your power over words for good and create the juicy, succulent, sweet fruit of uplifting words which will sustain you, not the rotten, sickening, disgusting fruit of negative words which will harm you.
With Love,
June
